Guard & Reserve Hangar

|
The Project: Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component members and their civilian employers. Part of the Department of Defense, it operates today through a network of hundreds of volunteers in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Europe. The agency recently rehabbed an 81-year-old hangar building at the Holt Field in Indianapolis to be used for offices and recruiting events.

The Challenge: David “Duke” Ellington, executive director of the Indiana Committee of the ESGR, says a number of organizations donated time and labor to the cause. “They had a vision for what they wanted to do with the facility but had no funding or manpower to accomplish the work,” says Pat Herman, Sherwin-Williams Indianapolis District Manager. “I suggested we could provide materials and explained that the local painter’s union apprenticeship program might be available to work on the job.”
Sherwin-Williams delivered about 200 gallons of paint to the facility in April 2007, and the union volunteers completed the job in May. Also instrumental were labor donations by the local plasterer’s union and lift usage donations from Caterpillar. “We’re extremely honored and appreciative of the good work done by the painters and all the other trades,” Ellington says. “They’ve brought an old building back to life.” More importantly, the new offices will provide space for a larger staff to build better relationships with state business owners.
“Hoosier employers have always been patriotic,” he says. “This will help us accomplish our mission to find ways to thank our 27,000 Guards and Reservists and their employers in Indiana, and to give employers opportunities to hire more Guards and Reservists.”
