Kalihi Extreme Makeover Home

|
The Project: ABC took its “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” show to Kalihi, Hawaii to build a new 3,500 square foot home for Theresa “Momi” Akana. A single mother of four, Akana founded the Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Center, a nonprofit organization that supports the Native Hawaiian community. The Extreme Makeover crew also built a second structure for use by Keiki O Ka Aina as a community recreation center. According to Brookfield Homes Hawai’i, the general contractor, it was the show’s largest project to date.

The Challenge: “The biggest challenge for this project was the time constraints,” says Jaime Dominguez of JD Painting. “The whole project needed to be completed in eight days, and the painting portion was just six days. There was a lot of paint to apply in six days,” Dominguez says. “Adding to the stress is the intermittent rain in Kalihi Valley.”
