Project Profiles
Cole Porter Birthplace

The Project:
Born in 1891 in Peru, Indiana, songwriter Cole Porter spent the first ten years of his life in the family home at 17-19 S. Huntington St. His birthplace was later converted into an apartment complex and fell into a state of disrepair. In 2003, a clandestine meth-amphetamine lab was discovered – and destroyed – in one of the apartments, and the property was turned over to the City of Peru. In 2004, the Ole Olsen Memorial Theatre purchased this historic landmark to restore it to its 1891 condition.

The Painter:
A Ladies Touch Painting, Kokomo, Ind.

The Paint:
SuperPaint Interior Latex, ProClassic Enamel

The Challenge:
A professional painter for more than 30 years, Arletta Reith of A Ladies Touch Painting volunteered to choose and apply all colors for the home’s three six-room suites. “I tried to use pleasing colors that complemented the donated furnishings,” she says. She also credits Bev and Dane Starbuck for their donations in providing professional decoration and furnishings for the home.

Ceilings, doors and trim were done in Muslin (SW 6133), and some of the wall colors were Vanillin (SW 6371), Believable Buff (SW 6120), Softened Green (SW 6177) and Sands of Time (SW 6101).

“Everyone loves the paint job and the beautiful colors,” Reith says. The home was named to the Parade magazine/National Trust for Historic Preservation “History Happened Here” list.
