Project Profiles
Buchanan Lake Lighthouse

The Project:
A 110-foot concrete lighthouse tower built in 1983 on the south end of Buchanan Lake in central Texas, about 60 miles northwest of Austin. Visible from Texas State Highway 29, the lighthouse is owned by Citizens Inc., and was recently made fully operational, including a light.

The Painter:
Smith Painting, Inc., Cedar Park, Texas

The Paint:
Sher-Cryl High Performance Acrylic
SuperPaint Exterior Latex High Gloss

The Challenge:
The owner wanted a checkerboard pattern, which Jerry Smith of Smith Painting designed and completed, working from lifts on uneven terrain. Smith selected two Sherwin-Williams products to provide his customer with the utmost in color retention and durability: SuperPaint High Gloss for the main section, and Sher-Cryl HPA for the roof.

Sher-Cryl performs comparably to high performance solvent-based systems such as urethanes and epoxies and provided the UV resistance needed for that part of the project. Using the high gloss sheen of SuperPaint ensured that the colors stood out on the main body of the lighthouse, especially the Positive Red (SW6871), says Dave Smith, Sherwin-Williams commercial sales rep.
