The Project: For more than 200 years, the Pluto Mineral Spring has drawn visitors to French Lick, Ind. “In the annals of American spas, French Lick Springs retains the distinction of making Indiana a Midwestern mecca for healing and hedonism,” says Spa Management Journal. French Licks Springs Hotel opened in 1845. Sitting on 2,600 acres in the Hoosier National Forest, it was part of a recent $382 million restoration and expansion project.

The Painter: Conrad Schmitt Studios, Inc. (CSS), New Berlin, Wis.

The Paint: Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200 Interior Latex and Illusions Faux Finishing Glaze, plus a wide array of specialty products.

The Challenge: "From the start, we all knew our goal," says Gunar Gruenke of CSS, one of the largest decorative painting companies in the U.S. "The client wanted people to walk into the hotel and say, 'Wow!'" A lot of hard work and artisan craftsmanship went into accomplishing that goal. "Miles and miles" of ornamental plaster were restored, including more than 850 plaster rosettes. Canvases were stenciled in the CSS studio in Wisconsin and flown to the site for installation. Gold and aluminium leaf, accent glazes and faux finishes were employed to bring out all the architectural details. ProMar 200 and Illusions glaze were used throughout the ensure a high-end finish.
